Some time back I wrote an article in this blog on finding a budget hotel in Macau. My conclusion at that time was that it was not easy to find a good hotel in Macau at a budget price. Hotel tariffs in Macau just keep increasing because of the expensive real estate and the fact that almost all the new hotel accommodation is getting added in the 4 or 5 star categories as part of the new casino resorts coming up in Taipa. During my several visits to Macau I have stayed in many of the budget hotels. Unfortunately, for every new visit the previous hotels I stayed in became more expensive. Yet there was one hotel that knew was cheap but did not look so promising to me. That was 'Macau Masters Hotel'. Its average guest ratings were below seven and that worried me. During my September 2016 trip, I had to take another look at Macau Masters Hotel out of a sheer necessity, a price that I could afford. I booked it for seven nights, stayed there and now I feel bad for having avoided the hotel earlier. In my Macau hotel experience so far, Macau Masters Hotel offered me the best value for its price. I paid roughly 50 USD per day by doing an advance booking on Agoda with "pay later and free cancellation" options. Keep reading...

As is true with most budget hotels in Macau, Macau Masters Hotel is located in the Historical district around Senado Square. From Senado Square if you are walking towards Project Ponte 16 on the road that will take you to Barra or A Ma Temple, you will reach Macau Masters Hotel in less than 10 minutes. Once you reach the T-junction at Ponte 16 (Sofitel Macau), turn left and you will find this hotel after a minute on the other side of the road. Other hotels in the vicinity are Ole London Hotel and Best Western Sun Sun. The free shuttle bus of Sofitel Macau can be used by the guests of Macau Masters Hotel to travel from/to Macau Ferry Terminal. A public bus (Number 26, fare 5 MOP) to Macau International Airport is available from a bus stop located almost opposite the hotel (in front of 7-Eleven). Just keep in mind that this is a mini bus, gets crowded during peak hours, and takes a very long route to reach the airport. If you are taking this bus, keep an hour at least of free time to get to the airport.

Facilities in Macau Masters Hotel

Macau Masters Hotel has all the basics - clean and peacful rooms, clean bathrooms, free and fast Wi-Fi, and provides two small water bottles in the room daily without cost. Other amenities in the rooms are a flat screen TV, a tea/coffee maker with daily 2 packs of 3-in-1 coffee mix, coffee cups & drink glasses, a refrigerator with some drinks on payment basis, two easy chairs & a small coffee table, and a cabinet. Disposable slippers were available in the room and used slippers were replaced daily. The only thing that I missed was a locker in the room, but that was not a big issue. In-room 'Chinese Traditional Massage' can be ordered at a price of 398 HKD for 60 minutes. Digital keys have to be used to open room doors and even to operate the elevator. These take care of the safety aspect and are perhaps necessary too. The hotel building houses a "massage" establishment on the third and fourth floors and the digital keys prevent the "massage" customers from using the hotel elevator. Of course there is a separate elevator going to the "massage" floors.

The hotel reception is manned 24 hours a day and staff understand and speak English. The area is safe at any time of the day or night. A taxi ride from The Venetian in Taipa to this hotel at night costs approximately 70 MOP. Taxi to the airport may cost around 100 MOP if one is not taking the bus. Coming here from the airport maybe tricky because there is no Sofitel Macau shuttle from the airport. Still, if one does not want to take a taxi, one option will be to take a Wynn Palace / Sands Cotai Central shuttle to their hotel, then from there take another free shuttle to Macau Ferry Terminal. From the ferry terminal, the Sofitel Macau shuttle will bring you to within a minute's walking distance of Macau Masters Hotel.

A deposit of 500 HKD is required to be kept at the reception at the time of check-in which is returned at the time of check-out. I did not have HKD at the check-in time so they asked me to keep 50 USD. Check-in time is 2.00pm but early check-in is allowed subject to availability. Check-out time is 12.00pm. Another advantage of booking Macau Masters Hotel is that the booking can be cancelled free of cost up to a day before arrival. I think you will like Macau Masters Hotel just as I did.
