In the age of information where every speculation in professional wrestling finds its way in the headlines, the fans remain regularly updated on what's transpiring in the wrestling business. With the Road to WrestleMania bringing more casual audiences to the frame, WWE always tries to put their best foot forward to sell the Grandest Stage of Them All months in advance.
WrestleMania has built a reputation for itself of being a grand visual spectacle which would be an enormous celebration of the entire journey that transpired throughout that calendar year. Since Vince McMahon always likes the prospect of booking his headlining matches months in advance, there are many interesting bouts that were scheduled to happen at the Showcase of the Immortals.
While the company has been influential in setting up some incredible dream showdowns at the event, there are many bouts that they almost booked and fortunately scrapped.
Here are the 4 weirdest WrestleMania matches you won't believe WWE almost booked.
#1 The Undertaker vs Wade Barrett - WrestleMania 27
The Undertaker who is widely regarded as one of the greatest superstars in the history of WWE was rumoured to lock horns with Wade Barrett at WrestleMania 27. While this may come as a shock to many, a more shocking prospect about this bout included the Undertaker wanting to get his streak ended by the former Nexus Leader.
The Phenom was very keen on retiring in 2011 and was locked into square off against Barrett after Vince McMahon failed to bring Brock Lesnar for a blockbuster showdown.
Since the Nexus debuted in such splendid fashion, it was obvious why the Deadman would have agreed to the idea, but Vince eventually dropped the plan, as he didn't consider Barrett to be on that top level.
Considering that Barrett had more downs than ups in the WWE, I'm glad that the company scrapped the plan and went ahead with Triple H instead.
#2 Brock Lesnar vs Shane McMahon - WrestleMania 33
Brock Lesnar, who is considered a massive box-office attraction in the sports entertainment industry, was rumoured to get in a riveting feud with Shane McMahon which would have seen them fight it out at WrestleMania 33.
The company started teasing it all when the Beast Incarnate brutally decimated Randy Orton in their match at SummerSlam 2016 which led the SmackDown Live Commissioner to intervene and receive a jaw-dropping F5 from the Universal Champion.
While the match was literally locked down to happen at the Showcase of the Immortals, Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter claimed that it was Lesnar who refused the offer to fight Shane O'Mac.
Moreover, he opined that Goldberg's contract in 2017 played an influential role in coercing Vince McMahon to scrap the bout and go with Brock Lesnar Vs. Goldberg instead. Shane went on to face off AJ Styles in a classic at Orlando and Lesnar was also successful in giving us the much-needed big fight feel along with Goldberg.
#3 John Cena vs Jinder Mahal for the WWE Championship - WrestleMania 34
While Jinder Mahal winning the WWE Championship definitely felt like a shocking move from Vince McMahon, his subsequent WrestleMania 34 plan had me stunned to the core. The former WWE Champion was apparently locked in to clash against John Cena at the Grandest Stage of Them All in New Orleans, and that too, for the most coveted prize in sports entertainment.
Ever since Mahal outshined Randy Orton at Backlash 2017, the then WWE Champion gravitated nuclear heat from legions of WWE fans, and while the idea looked convincing on the paper, the execution was pretty poor.
Considering that Mahal's credibility began to drop so frequently on a weekly basis, Vince decided to ascend AJ Styles again as the WWE Champion and dropped the entire 'American' angle with John Cena.
The Cenation Leader went on to participate in a Mixed Tag Team Match by joining forces with Nikki Bella to face The Miz and Maryse, while Jinder found his way into the United States Championship feud which he eventually won in New Orleans.
While Cena vs Mahal for the WWE Championship could have been believable at that time, but booking this as a potential show headliner definitely felt outright stupid.
#4 The Rock vs Vin Diesel - WrestleMania 33
The Rock is arguably one of the biggest stars in the entire sports entertainment industry and remains a headlining rumour every time the WrestleMania season begins to kick off.
The Great One was heavily slated to clash with his Fast and Furious co-star Vin Diesel at the Grandest Stage of Them All in Orlando which would have reportedly elevated the hype for their movie. There's no denying that Vince McMahon has always entertained the idea of garnering massive mainstream attention through his incredible business acumen.
Considering the fact that there were rumours of the Rock having some apparent heat with Vin Diesel during their time on Fast and Furious, there were plans for an epic showdown between the two at the Showcase of the Immortals.
While the plan eventually got scrapped for reasons unknown, the Great One hasn't returned to the squared circle for an in-ring bout since WrestleMania 29 (barring an impromptu match against Eric Rowan at WrestleMania 32), and with the company constantly wanting a headlining clash for the biggest event of the year, it is likely that the former WWE Champion would show up to electrify the crowd, one day.
