Friends, in this article I have discussed about the difficulties that Newton faced to provided the Law of gravitation.

Sir Isaac Newton was a great astronomer, mathematician, observer in his era. He had continued the observations of Brahe, Kepler and Galileo. After many observations, he proposed his famous laws about motion. His first law of motion says about inertia which was first explained by Galileo. Intertia means each objet will continue its state ( of motion or rest ) as long as an external force acts on it. And if the objet is moving, it will move with uniform velocity along a straight line.

But Newton faced problem when he explained about the motion of celestial bodies. Because, celestial bodies move along elliptical path instead of a straight line path in the absence of any contact force ( like push or pull ). After deep observation, he suggested that there exists another force named Gravity.

Gravity is an unseen force. At first, it was believed that gravitational force was mainly connected with earth, as we experience it in our daily life. But, Newton extended his insight and claimed that the gravity not only acts upon the objects present on earth but also on the celestial bodies. The gravitational force of Earth affects the motion of our Moon due to which it moves in an elliptical path around the Earth instead in a straight line i.e. it has been pulled towards the earth.

Now, the difficulty was to describe the gravitational force in mathematically. It was observed that the force ( gravity) of an object decreases rapidly as we move away from the object. But interesting thing is that it never becomes zero i.e. it continues to act to some degree. So, Newton suggested that the magnitude of that force is inversely proportional to the square of distance of separation as well as directly proportional to the multiplication of the masses of these two objects.
