Amir seals Pakistan's 75 run-win over England
Yasir Shah was named man of the match after the leg-spinner continued his hold over the English batsmen, with his four for 69 in the doomed chase giving him 10 for the Test.
Victory saw Pakistan go 1-0 up in the four-match series ahead of the second Test at Old Trafford starting on Friday.
Immediately after winning the match, team Pakistan performed five push-ups to salute the officers who had trained them at the training camp set up for them at the Pakistan Military Academy in Kakul.
The pair chewed up 255 balls between them, blocking out Yasir’s vicious leg-spin and milking the pace bowlers for singles, but when Bairstow was deceived by a flat non-spinning delivery from Yasir, Pakistan smelt blood.
Woakes, only recalled to Test duty after fellow all-rounder Ben Stokes was injured during the preceding Sri Lanka series, now had an overall return of 11 for 101 – the first time he had taken at least 10 wickets in a Test match.
Alastair Cook, the England captain, blamed “naive” batting for the defeat, with none of his batsmen reaching 50 as Yasir spun a web for the second time in the match.
Pakistan had never previously lost a Test when Misbah had made a hundred and never won one when he had made a duck.
Rahat Ali’s three morning wickets had caused major damage, though, while Yasir removed Ballance, Moeen Ali, Bairstow and Woakes to leave Amir the job of cleaning up Jake Ball’s stumps.
With England 47 for three it was left to Vince and Ballance to step in and add a modicum of calm, though England still face a severe challenge to move to victory.
Amir, former Pakistan captain Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif were all banned for spot-fixing during Pakistan’s tour of England in 2010, particularly for incidents during the fourth Test at Lord’s.
Rahat had taken two for eight in 13 balls and England were 32-2.
“To allow Yasir to get six wickets when it wasn’t turning has cost us”, said Cook.
Rahat very almost had four before lunch, James Vince having survived on nine when he squeezed an edged drive low to Younus Khan’s right at second slip. He made 43 runs from 66 balls. England lost their final three wickets early, only adding 19 runs to their overnight score. Chris Woakes then took the ball and took his first of the innings.
Cook was the first to go, nicking a feather through to Sarfraz Ahmed off the metronomic Ali for 8, before Hales chased a wide delivery and was snared at slip to the same bowler, for 16.
Chris Woakes, after taking six wickets in the first innings now has five in the second and it could be argued is really the only reason England are still in the match.
Joe Root, England’s new No. 3, got off the mark with a back-foot cover drive for four off Rahat and also drove him through the same region, off the front foot, for another boundary.
