EXCLUSIVE| Even after Da Da Dasse and Chhil Gaye Naina, I am labelled as Baby Doll singer, says Kanika Kapoor
Having garnered more than 10 million views on YouTube, Kanika Kapoor’s recently-released single Cheater Mohan has become a huge hit among the music listeners. The song, that features rap by Ikka, is composed and sung by Kanika and has lyrics penned by Shabir Ahmed. By Kanika’s own admission, Cheater Mohan is a blend of modern and traditional.
The song’s hook line is Kabhi Aar Kabhi Paar, which is lifted from the superhit song of the same name from the 1954 film Aar Paar. Wasn’t Kanika apprehensive about using it considering how the remakes of old classics are mainly slammed these days?
“Actually, I have only used the hook line from the old song. Also, I have changed the melody, so what you get is a completely new song. I wanted a nice hook line and 'Kabhi Aar Kabhi Paar' is actually working on this song,” she said in an exclusive chat with Zoom TV Digital.
While Kanika has sung out and out party songs such as Baby Doll and Lovely, she is also the voice behind serious songs such as Da Da Dasse and Chhil Gaye Naina. As an artist, what kind of songs satisfy her the most?
“I want to do sufi and semi-classical songs, which I am currently working on. Even after singing songs such as Da Da Dasse and Chhil Gaye Naina, I am a labelled as Baby Doll singer. But now, people are realising that I am capable of singing non-party songs as well. The sad part is when Da Da Dasse came out, my own friends were surprised to know that I had sung the song,” she said.

In times when Bollywood actors are turning into singers, doesn’t she feel insecure?
“Absolutely not. I am yet to see an actor who sings well. But I must say that Alia Bhatt’s rendition of Samjhawan was really nice,” she signed off saying.
