CHENNAI: A staffer of a private hospital in Thirukovilur is in trouble following the death of a woman whose foetus she allegedly aborted illegally. The abortion procedure done by Vanitha in TV Hospital in Thirukovilur on June 7 , came to light after patient died.
Following information, P Banu, Director of Medical Service (in-charge) formed a team from Chennai, including Superintendent Kamala Kannan, joint director S Gurunathan, officer on special duty and other officials.

According a health official, E Navasakthi (34), a mother of four wanted to abort her fifth pregnancy. So, she went to the hospital. Vanitha allegedly did a D and C, a procedure to remove tissue from inside the uterus. The woman developed health issues later. On June 18, she had fits at home and was rushed to the Government hospital in Thirukovilur.

However, she developed severe sepsis that led to Multiple Cerebral Ischemia, a condition of limited blood supply to the brain. She passed out and was shifted to Villupuram Government Medical College Hospital. She died on July 1 due to infection. The family received the body and buried it. The Directorate of Medical Services later raided the hospital.

Officials seized the scan machine and abortion pills. They filed a complaint in Thirukovilur police station. A case has been booked against Vanitha.
Officials also said a gynaecologist from Rajiv Gandhi Women’s Hospital in Puducherry used to practice in the hospital now and then. “When contacted, the doctor said, she was not aware of these activities in the hospital,” an official said. Another source said, “The officials also found the hospital to have been involved in female foeticide.” Vanitha fled after seeing officials.
