DMK's Villupuram town secretary out on morning walk hacked to death
VILLUPURAM: An unidentified armed gang murdered DMK town secretary, C Selvaraj after intercepting him during his morning walk, sparking tension across the Villupuram town on Wednesday morning. DMK cadre damaged more than 50 shops including a JoyAlukkas branch and demanded all shops to be shut during Selvaraj's funeral procession.
Earlier, more than 200 DMK cadre staged a road blockade at NH 45 near Mundiyambakkam GH demanding arrest of the murderers. Police said, Selvaraj (48) a close associate and former political PA of Thirukovilur DMK MLA K Ponmudi was hacked to death by miscreants after intercepting his morning walk here at the North railway premises.
The five member gang confirmed Selvaraj's death and fled the spot. Supporters of Selvaraj and local residents who arrived at the spot informed the town police station officials, who took Selvaraj's body to the Mundiyambakkam GH, were he was declared brought dead. After the autopsy, the body was handed over to his family members and was cremated at Salamedu crematorium on Wednesday evening. DMK party leaders including Thirukovilur MLA K Ponmudi, Vikravandi MLA K Radhamani, former MLA of DMK S Pushparaj and various other party functionaries took part in his funeral procession.
Police officials and forensic experts headed by Villupuram SP K S Narendran Nayar inspected the spot. A senior police official who did not want his name to be revealed said to Express that based on suspicion, the special police team detained a history sheeter and close associates of a rowdy Pathar Selvam (who was brutally murdered on April 21, 2015).
