LUDHIANA: The police on Friday claimed to have solved the architect murder case with the arrest of two contract killers. Gurwinder Singh, 27, of Aman Nagar and his accomplice Amanpal, of New Aman Nagar were arrested from the city in the morning hours.

Mandeep Singh Bansal, 32, a resident of Dhandra Road, was shot dead in Dugri Phase-I on October 11. He was visiting a construction site when a man on a motorcycle pumped four bullets into him around 10am. Later in the day, police had booked Balwinder Singh, an auto-parts businessman and resident of New Aman Nagar, after Mandeep’s family accused him of the murder. The family said Mandeep allegedly had illicit relations with Balwinder’s wife.

Additional deputy commissioner of police (ADCP) Surinder Lamba said, “Balwinder — who is on the run — is the main conspirator. Infuriated over Mandeep’s alleged affair with his wife, Balwinder hired Gurwinder, a computer hardware professional, to eliminate him. The deal was struck at Rs 15 lakh. Gurwinder shot Mandeep with a licensed weapon. Amanpal, who is in his 40s, followed Gurwinder on another bike to keep a watch.”

Police commissioner Sukchain Singh Gill said, “Balwinder had been planning the murder with Gurwinder for the past six months. Of the Rs 15 lakh contract money, he promised to give Rs 5 after the killing and the remainder in the next few months. Gurwinder was in need of money as he was getting married on October 14. With the day approaching, he was getting restive to execute the killing and get payment. Balwinder, too, wanted to get rid of Mandeep at the earliest.”

After firing shots at the architect, Gurwinder gave empty cartridges to Amanpal, who handed those over to Balwinder as a proof of the killing. The three accused were in touch with each other all through the incident.

The police commissioner said, “The CCTV cameras installed in and around the crime spot too had captured Gurwinder and Amanpal. We have recovered the weapon used in the crime. Though it is a licensed one, we are checking in whose name it is registered.”

Earlier, too, Gurwinder had made many unsuccessful attempts to eliminate Mandeep, police added.

In his police complaint, Mandeep’s brother Surmeet Singh had said, “We lived in Shimlapuri two years ago. There, Mandeep developed relationship with a married woman. When her husband, Balwinder, came to know about it, he threatened Mandeep with dire consequences. Following this, we shifted to Dhandra Road. However, Mandeep continued his relationship with the woman.”
